Kent Underlayments mobilized to Akron Children’s Hospital in March 2025, to complete a large, deep, and complex pour on the fifth floor, covering approximately 50,000 square feet. This project required a high level of precision and attention to detail to ensure a smooth and flat surface that meets the hospital’s strict performance and durability standards. Kent’s ability to complete this project within just four days is an incredible accomplishment, demonstrating both efficiency and expertise in large-scale pours.
Project Scope and Phases:
Day 1:
- Surface Preparation: Kent Underlayments prepped the fifth floor by using Maxxon® Acrylic Primer, a high-quality bonding agent designed to ensure strong adhesion and prevent delamination.
- Installation of Bulkheads and Grade Pins: Bulkheads were strategically placed to control material flow and define pour sections, while grade pins were set to establish precise leveling points.
Days 2-4:
- Pouring of Level-Right®: The Kent Underlayments team poured Maxxon® Level-Right, a high-strength, self-leveling underlayment designed to provide a smooth, durable surface for a variety of finished floor systems. The pour was conducted in multiple phases to ensure even distribution and accurate leveling across the large area.
- Ongoing Preparation and Quality Assurance: Throughout the process, slump test and cube set samples were taken every 5,000 SF. Kent Underlayments monitored the pour, making necessary adjustments to maintain proper thickness, curing, and uniformity.
Maxxon® Commercial Products Utilized:
This project leveraged Maxxon’s Commercial Line of products, specifically selected for their superior performance in large-scale commercial environments.
- Maxxon® Acrylic Primer: Ensured optimal bond strength and enhanced underlayment durability.
- Maxxon® Level-Right: A self-leveling underlayment designed for deep pours, providing a strong, crack-resistant surface.
Project Challenges and Considerations:
- Complexity of the Pour: Due to the size and depth, careful coordination was required to manage material flow, maintain consistency, and ensure timely completion.
- Logistics and Scheduling: Kent Underlayments minimized disruptions to the active healthcare environment by working safely and efficiently.
- Quality Control: Surface preparation, product application, and curing were continuously monitored to ensure compliance with industry standards.
Results:
The completed fifth floor of Akron Children’s Hospital now features a smooth, durable, and flat surface. Thanks to Kent Underlayments’ ability to complete the project in just four days, minimal disruption. The use of Maxxon’s Commercial Line products ensured the highest standards of performance, reliability, and longevity.
